China has raised the surcharge on retail electricity prices for renewable energy development from the current RMB 2 ($0.29) per megawatt hour (MWh) to RMB 4 ($0.59) per MWh, the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) announced on Nov. 20. The surcharge hike was disclosed in six circulars that the NDRC released to detail changes to power tariffs in different regions. In 2006, China began levying a surcharge of RMB 1 ($0.15) on retail power tariffs to support renewable energy development. The surcharge rose to RMB 2 ($0.29) in 2008.
